Recent Activities

The lists of countries using LARA is not only increasing, also the scope of use within many countries is widening. Here some recent examples:

  • Finland started to use LARA in the tactical phase of Airspace Management. LARA is connected and feeding the Main and Shadow ATC System with real-time airspace status information. 145 users on LARA are managing 853 areas. The areas are tactically activated by civil and military controllers using LARA.
  • The LARA Team has been actively supporting Skyguide in the development of their new ConOps for Airspace Management and Civil-Military Coordination, which foresees a much deeper integration of LARA into their operations.
  • France is currently investigating to integrate LARA with their ATC System and Bulgaria is looking at options to integrate LARA and CIMACT data in the generation of PRISMIL KPIs.

The LARA Team conducted LARA Training Sessions for Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Croatia and Austria. A training for civil and military users in Portugal will follow later this year.

LARA Information briefings were provided to Morrocco, Slovenia, Iceland, Malta and Israel. A further information Session is planned for the Czech Republic in September of 2023.

LARA Demonstrations were provided at the Global Civil-Military Aviation Summit and to the Military Harmonisation Group (MILHAG) in EUROCONTROL to show cross-border capabilities and SWIM interfaces available in 2024+.

LARA in Australia

Australia is in the process of implementing LARA to support the establishment of NAMO – the Australian National Airspace Management Office. A delegation of Airservices Australia visited NATS, MUAC, the Civil-Military Cooperation Division and the LARA Team earlier this year to collect information on the operational use of the system and to prepare the implementation of LARA in Australia. The LARA Team has provided an online LARA access for Australia to trial the system, further evolve the operational concept and prepare the implementation, which is foreseen to start in 2024.

LARA V5 and the ASM SWIM Project

The next major version of LARA, V5 is expected to release end of Q1 2024. The focus in development is currently the SWIM ASM Service provision. A first beta with this functionality is planned to be provided in September 2023. This will allow other systems to use this Beta version to develop and test against. This is especially relevant for the implementation of the respective SWIM Services in ATC Systems linked to the CEF Call.

On June 22, the CLEAN ATM initiative, prepared and coordinated by the EUROCONTROL and the SESAR Deployment Manager in response to the CEF Transport Call for proposals 2022, was selected as one of the transport projects to receive EU grants from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). CEF is the main instrument to support strategic transport investments in the European Union. The initiative, which engages over 40 civil and military operational stakeholders (Airlines, ANSPs, Airports, MET providers, NM and military authorities) from the whole pan-European network, is a key step forward for modernizing and decarbonizing the aviation industry in the coming years. With € 71 million of funds awarded, the CLEAN ATM proposal is by far the largest initiative amongst the ATM-related projects selected by the Union. The ASM-SWIM project, Work Package 7, will help 12 organisations to deploy the future SWIM services for ASM provision as required by CP1.

Those interested and not part of the CEF Call, can join as observers and benefit from the experience gathered from the other project participants.
